A Century of Achievement for Rubery Owen

The Darlaston firm has been at the forefront of automotive component technology since the birth of the motor car.

Motor Vehicle Industry Expands

The third generation of the Owen family joined the firm in the 1960's, when current group chairman David Owen started the motor division. Through the turbulent times in the 1970's and 1980's Rubery Owen Holdings has changed shape.

Although the Glory years were spent in the motor vehicle component industry, with Rubery Owen being one of the main suppliers in the car, truck, trailer and tractor industry, the family tradition & entrepreneurial spirit in developing new business and creating worthwhile employment has continued. Rubery Owen, although still very much wedded to the component industry, are now committed to servicing the industry rather than producing the components.

Rubery Owen is always at the forefront of research and design. As well as establishing ROTECH LABORATORIES another firm has been set up for the 21st Century -
ROZONE, with its range of SmartWashers, a self recycling parts-cleaner for automotive and engineering operations.
Strip down every car or truck ever built in Britain before 1980, as well as some manufactured in Europe, and you will find a Rubery Owen part somewhere
keeping the vehicle on the road. That is just one of the company's claims to fame. It has also seen the glory years of motor racing with Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart at the wheel, as part of the legendary BRM team.

Foundations

The firm started taking shape in 1884 through John Turner Rubery and it was in 1893 that Alfred Ernest Owen joined

the company and became the driving force behind its success in the 20th Century.

The firm went from being simple Rubery & Co to Rubery Owen in 1905 and was then taken over entirely by Mr Owen 5 years later when John Rubery retired.

By 1912 the firm had 5 departments supplying roofing, fencing, motor frames, engineering and aviation components and continued to expand through the 1920's and 1930's, when the business was handed on to his sons Alfred and Ernest.

New Development

The group has also expanded into Land Rover distribution through Shukers in Ludlow and Shrewsbury. Burrows (GM)Ltd is also expanding its franchises for a range of grass cutting equipment both in Stafford and Leyland, Lancashire.
